What:
Join us for An Introduction to Cross-Cultural Trauma Care, an in-person seminar led by Trauma Specialist and Seminary Professor Brenton Diaz. This training equips Member Care Providers to understand trauma through a cross-cultural lens and to support individuals and communities who have experienced profound loss, violence, displacement, or cultural disruption.
Through practical teaching, participants will gain tools to engage trauma with sensitivity, cultural awareness, and hope. The seminar includes refreshments, course materials, and dedicated time for networking, collaboration, and mutual encouragement among our MORE Partners.
Speaker:
Brenton Diaz is a Trauma Therapist with experience working with individuals affected by trauma, violence, depression, anxiety, substance use, and eating disorders. He teaches part-time in the School of Social Work at York University and Lakehead University and lectures on trauma at Tyndale University. Brenton has also taught in post-secondary institutions in Lithuania, Kenya, and Ukraine, as well as at Georgian College.

He previously worked with the Rwandan community in Toronto, providing training for a local Rwandan church on the effects of the genocide against the Tutsi. Through Beyond the Veil, a non-profit focused on providing appropriate mental health education and support to Rwandan, African, Caribbean, and Black communities in Canada, Brenton contributes to research, training, and public messaging on trauma awareness.
Brenton holds a BA in Social Development Studies from the University of Waterloo and both his BSW and MSW from York University. His MSW Practice-Based Research Paper, which analyzed services available to Mexican migrant farm workers in Canada, received the Gerry Erickson Prize for Best Paper.
He currently serves as the Clinical Coordinator of the Adult Program at Cedar Centre, an agency in York Region that works with individuals who experienced interpersonal trauma in childhood.
Brenton is known for his clarity, compassion, and ability to bridge clinical knowledge with real-world application—making trauma concepts accessible and empowering for those who care for others in cross-cultural settings.
